Big news, Dark Horse have recently announced 2 new ATLA comics. One of them is the full reveal of the previously announced 2018 Avatar comic by Faith Erin Hicks and Peter Wartman and the other is a brand new one-shot comic. The 2018 Avatar comic series will be called Imbalance, you can see the cover for Part 1 here Here is the product description for this book
This new three-part adventure follows Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph as they return to Earthen Fire Industries—the factory owned by Toph’s father—and Team Avatar find that the once-small town of Cranefish is now booming. Expecting a warm welcome, Aang is surprised when their arrival is met with disinterest and even open hostility. At a business council meeting, the reason for the slight becomes clear: A massive bender versus non-bender conflict has gripped the town’s inhabitants, and is threatening to turn violent!
The second comic is a one shot anthology called Team Avatar Tales that will feature a bunch of shorter stories similar to the previously released Lost Adventures book. It is confirmed that this book will feature the previously released Free Comic Book Day stories in addition to new stories. Here is the cover and product description

My Thoughts

This is a big announcement and something Dark Horse really needed to deliver, we needed more than just the details on the next ATLA series, so the Team Avatar Tales announcement was an amazing surprise. It solves 2 big issues, first that the FCBD stories have always been tricky to get for a lot of fans so them being collected in an official release is great, the other issue is that especially recently the ATLA comics have tended to be a bit too unfocused with trying to roughly span the gap between ATLA and Korra, but the characters being too young to really make any big moves towards Republic City so the anthology format gives us the chance to get more specific character focused stories that can perhaps just focus in on one key moment/reveal. The details confirm that Team Avatar Tales will have the same page count as Imbalance part 1 meaning that it will more than likely be 72 pages of actual content. 3 of these stories will likely be "Rebound", "Shells" and "Sisters", all 3 of these comics are just about 10 pages long meaning we should have just over 40 pages worth of new content. The description hints at a mix of fun and serious stories so like The Lost Adventures we should have a nice blend of stories and art styles. As for Imbalance, the description seems interesting, but I have some doubts if it will be the meaningful story we have been waiting for. I have a slight fear that this may go the way of North and South with the issues presented not really being as big as initially suspected. I am interested in how they approach the bender/non-bender conflict in this era, but at the same time I can't help but feel like there is a much bigger story that we are waiting to be told with Azula. I am of course going to give Imbalance a chance, I just have some questions at this early stage, mainly because North and South started well and we know how that went. I want some notable events to happen in the comics, how long are we going to be waiting until we get something.
