Avatar The Last Airbender The Promise Part 2

Published By: Dark Horse Comics Written By: Gene Luen Yang Art and Cover By: Team Gurihiru, Pencils and Inks by Sasaki, Colours By Kawano Letters By: Michael Heisler   Setting: Set immediately after The Promise Part 1 with 1 flashback to Zuko at 3 years old and a flashback to Toph in between 321 and the start of The Promise Part 1. Synopsis/ We start right where part 1 ended. Aang, Sokka, Katara, Toph and Momo are all on Appa heading to Ba Sing Se to plan a meeting between themselves, Fire Lord Zuko and Earth King Kuei. Aang and Katara are holding hands and giving Sokka "oogies" again, Toph then reveals that it is time for her to return to her metalbending students. Sokka sees this as a chance to get away from the two lovebirds and decides to go with Toph, Aang goes to land Appa, but Toph just grabs Sokka and jumps off Appa. She uses her earthbending  to break their fall. Sokka then asks Toph about why she decided to start a school, Toph then tells Sokka of how training Aang was really fulfilling and she felt like she made a difference and that she likes shouting at people. They arrive back at her Dojo and she introduces Sokka to her students: Ho Tun,who always thinks of doom, Penga, who likes boys and shoes and The Dark One, who hates everything especially his real name. They then reveal that they were kicked out of the Dojo by Master Kunyo and his firebending students, she enters the Dojo and it is revealed that this was originally Kunyo's Dojo before the Harmony Restoration movement forced them out. He even doubts metalbending exists and Toph proves him wrong by making him a hat out of a spear. The two Masters are about to fight when Sokka steps in to stop the unnecessary violence by proposing a "match to the sit" where the students of each school will try to force the other team to sit down, in turn winning them the dojo. They all agree and Kunyo leaves with his students to train, but not before they give a demonstration of their skills which show Toph and her students that they are no match, and will have a lot of training to do in the 3 days before the match. Aang, Katara, Momo and Appa arrive in Ba Sing Se, they look for a place to sleep until they go to meet Kuei in the morning, but are soon spotted by members of The Official Avatar Aang Fan Club, Ba Sing Se Chapter. Aang is happy to see some fans, but Katara is a bit jealous at the female attention her boyfriend is getting, he introduces her to the club members and Katara is taken aback when one of them calls her Aang's "First girlfriend". Katara tries to lead Aang away to find somewhere to stay, but the club members offer to let them stay at the club house which they say is modelled after the Western Air Temple, an excited Aang agrees. When they arrive it is only the Western Air Temple as everything is upside down, but Aang is happy with the effort they put in. Continued on From Zuko's meeting with Ozai at the end of Part 1 Ozai reminds Zuko of a vacation they once took to Ember Island when Zuko was 3.  Zuko saw a Hawk attacking a Turtle-Crab and rushed to rescue the crab, Ozai comments on how Zuko has always had an affinity for the weak. He tells Zuko of how he then was conflicted about what to do: Save the Crab or leave the Hawk to starve. He was washed away by a wave before he could make a decision and Ozai had to save him. Zuko wonders how this story will help him to deal with the tough decisions of being Fire Lord, Ozai just says that he just told him and ushers Zuko away and asking that he bring him more tea tomorrow. Back at The Metalbending Dojo the students attempt to metalbend some coins, but are having no luck at all. Sokka asks Toph how she chose the 3 misfits as her first students. She then tells Sokka about how it was actually the space meteorite bracelet she wears that chose them. It shivers a bit sometimes and she realised it only happened when there were super emotional people around and thought that it may mean these people have the ability to metalbend and so she recruited Ho Tun, Penga and The Dark One, it just happened that if people are super emotional they end up being slightly crazy. Sokka then decides that Toph needs his help to get them metalbending and that he is a motivational bender as he is good at motivating people, he enthusiastically tries to get them to do a basic technique, but it does not work at all as the 3 don't try enough and complain about their failure. In the Clubhouse of the Avatar Aang Fan club, which is decorated with Air Nomad symbols and pictures of Aang and Sky Bisons, he demonstrates his Airbending to the girls and talks about his training in the Air Temples. Katara is a bit put out by all this attention on Aang. A member named, Hei-Won introduces Aang to Yee-Li and she shows Aang an object she had bought a few years ago from a merchant, Aang is surprised and impressed at the Airbender's Flute she has as Monk Gyatso used to have one. He plays it for the fan club and everyone is dancing except Katara who decides that it is time they went to see Kuei. As they leave Katara is about to tell Aang about she felt in their as he showed off for the girls when he reveals that although it was a silly fanclub it made him feel like he was at home with his people and he thanks Katara for staying with him. She is stunned by this and feels bad for feeling jealous at all and for perhaps not showing enough interest in his culture. She tells Aang that she does not deserve his thanks. Zuko returns to Ozai with more tea and tells Ozai that he stayed up all night thinking about what Ozai said. And that at the beach he could not decide, but that he should have sided with the Hawk as it was Strong and Noble like the Fire Nation and had earned it's meal, but that despite him now putting his nation first he still cannot sleep. Ozai tells Zuko that he is only partially correct, that his inability to sleep stems from his inability to distinguish what is right and choose sides, but that he was wrong about the Hawk. Not that he should have sided with the crab or the Hawk, but that as the fire lord, by definition any decision made is correct. Zuko angry now, says that no person is bigger than right or wrong, not even the Avatar. Ozai then begins to talk about Zuko's upcoming meeting with Earth King Kuei, he  tells Zuko that Kuei will not be reasonable and will not treat the colonies fairly given what the Fire Nation has done to the Earth Kingdom and that Zuko must defend them with all he has. Zuko says that he will be patient and have the meeting with Kuei and The Avatar. Ozai then calls the Avatar irrelevant by saying that the Avatar denies the strong's victory over the weak to which Zuko fires back that he trusts Aang. Ozai asks Zuko a tough question "More than you trust yourself?", he cannot answer and Ozai demands that he leave, furious at him. Zuko leaves and is seen by Suki. Back in Toph's dojo Toph attempts to train her students again, but once again no bending happens. Sokka then brings Toph aside with a new idea to help train them, by making them super emotional. They will use Penga's love of shoes, Ho Tun's fear of doom and The Dark Ones real name to get them emotional. He also asks Toph to use her matalbending to make something for him, he directs her on how to bend the metal and soon it is ready and the plan to teach her students in place. In the outskirts of Yu Dao, Kori is overseeing a group of Fire and Earthbenders from Yu Dao training to protect the city. Sneers then arrives and he and Kori kiss. She reveals the Fire and Earthbenders are her cousins and then asks about the protestors outside the city and Sneers admits that he was helping to lead that protest, Kori pushes him down and the two begin to argue. Sneers demands that Kori choose if she is Fire Nation or Earth Kindgom, she again states she is an Earthbender and a Fire Nation citizen that lives in Yu Dao and then asks Sneers if he wants to follow Smellerbee or be with her. Katara and Aang at last arrive at The Earth King's Palace, he greets them. They tell him about the meeting with Zuko and Kuei is still upset that Zuko had gone against the Harmony Restoration Movement and wants the colonies to remain. Aang says he is with Zuko, but Katara steps in saying that there are legitimate concerns. Kuei looks intense as he considers the meeting. Sokka camps outside with the students and then comes up with a scary story about why Toph but up The Fying Boar banner, to please The Winger Boar Spirit that haunts the mountain, he reveals that the Spirit is "The Ancient Harbinger of Doom and Eater of Fine Footwear" which gets Ho Tun and Penga emotional, suddenly a huge winged boar spirit appears from the nearby bushes and begins to eat Penga's shoes. The Dark One sees through the plan completely and knows it is Toph inside a metal suit. She then calls him by his real name, Moo-Chee-Goo-Chee-La-Poo-Chee The Third ! which depressed him. Sokka again throws up some coins, but the drained students  just lie on the ground, still not able to metalbend. Back in the Earth King's Palace Kuei has considered the idea of a meeting and reveals that he does not want to meet with Zuko as Zuko broke a promise to support the movement and that he has decided to have General How send an army to Yu Dao to enforce harmony. A shocked Aang urges him to reconsider, but he has decided and if Aang is not with him then Aang is against him. Toph and Sokka are sitting outside her Dojo and Sokka has a new idea, but Toph is oddly very serious. She ignores his plan and talks about metal, that it is earth that has been purified by going through pressure and pain. She then says that her parents expected her to be something she was not and that she too felt pressure and pain because of that, but that she is now doing the same to her students, expecting them to be something they are not. Sokka and Toph are unaware that the 3 students are listening in to this conversation. She decides that at the match tomorrow she is going to sit down and give Kunyo his school back. Leaving Sokka concerned. Aang and Katara rush to Appa to warn Yu Dao of Kuei's intentions. Aang hopes they can convince the people to evacuate before General How gets there, Katara asks Aang what will happen if these people refuse to leave their home. Aang simply says that Kuei is correct about Zuko breaking his promise and that promises should never be broken. Yee-Li listening in sends a Messenger Hawk to the Yu Dao chapter of the fan club to help Aang. Kunyo and his student arrive ready for the match, Kunyo still wearing the bent spear. She is about to forfeit the match when her students burst in, Ho Tun moving a coin and hitting Toph in the leg. Everyone is shocked, but Kunyo wastes no time and orders his students to attack. The Metalbending students are defenceless until Sokka throws in some coins for a 3rd time and the 3 finally metalbend and easily defeat the firebenders as they cannot defend against the flying coins, their firebending blocks just heating them up and causing more pain. They win the Match to The Sit as Kunyo is forced down. They leave humiliated. The Dark one reveals to Toph that they heard what she said, she is confuses as she did not say anything nice. Penga then reveals it was that Toph expected more of them than anyone else had ever done. She though that Ho Tun could be something more than a wimp, Penga more than a spoiled brat and The Dark One more than a Dark and Mysterious person. An excited Toph is ready to get their metalbending Training started fully now. Zuko stands in The Fire Lord's throne room and lights up the wall of Fire that his father used and instantly puts it out saying "This isn't me". Mai then enters the room and reveals that she knows that he has been meeting Ozai, Zuko just wonders how she knows, and Mai just answers that it was not from him. He says that he loves her, but Mai says that right now he loves his secrets more and reveals she is leaving. A shocked Zuko asks her to come back and then orders her to come back before realising how silly it is to order her back. Suki then enters the room and reveals it was she who told Mai about him meeting Ozai. She tells Zuko that she and The Kyoshi Warriors are worried about him. It is then that General Mak arrives with a message from the spies Zuko sent to The Earth Kingdom, Suki is shocked about the news of spies. Mak reveals that Earth King Kuei's forces are marching for Yu Dao, Zuko realises that Ozai was correct about Kuei. The book ends with 2 near identical pages. The first of Kuei in a War Balloon flying along next to many troops and Tanks on the march to Yu Dao, the second of Zuko on a battleship leading a whole fleet to Yu Dao. Both have intense looks in their eyes, both intent on proving themselves to be good leaders of their nations. I will also be doing a synopsis of Part 3 when it comes out, September 26th in Comic Stores and October 9th from Amazon and Bookstores.
