Big Avatar Comics news. We now have some details about the Avatar comic coming after Smoke and Shadow. The next series will be called North and South and it will be released September 14th 2016 in comic stores and September 27th 2016 elsewhere. Here is the cover for Part 1 NorthAndSouthPart1 Here is the description
When Aang leaves to aid Zuko with the Kemurikage, Katara and Sokka return to the Southern Water Tribe by themselves. Katara is shocked to find that her beloved village has become a bustling city, with none other than their father, Hakoda, in charge! A Northerner named Malina seems to be behind this change, pushing the North and South to be more unified…but what are her true goals?
Creative team will be the same as usual. Gene Yang writing and Team Gurihiru on art. I don't think it is a surprise to anyone that this series will be about the return to the Southern Water Tribe, but it is great to get confirmation at last. I love the cover, it feels like early ATLA, but also brand new at the same time, we are returning to the place where it all started after all. It seems like we will be addressing how the SWT went from basically nothing to the much more built up city we see in Korra. We know Pakku brought some people from the Northern Tribe to help rebuild and we will now see what exactly has happened. The other key factor they could reference is in relation to The Rift, Katara's old friends, Nutha and Niyok, who both left the SWT to find work. Something is clearly up between the two tribes. This new character Malina seems very interesting, in part because that is the same name as Unalaq's wife who we never actually met. The timeline means it cannot be the same person, but perhaps some relation could be at play here, after all in Korra Unalaq is the chief of both tribes and wants to unite them. The Unalaq link is probably a bit of a stretch, but this series is shaping up to be very interesting, it should at least explain in part how the Chief of the North is the chief of both tribes.
